DECATUR – State Rep. Bill Mitchell had some harsh words for the Illinois prison system Wednesday.
Speaking outside the Decatur Correctional Center, the Republican from Forsyth called management within the Illinois Department of Corrections “incompetent,” and called on Gov. Pat Quinn to reverse a decision to lay off about 1,100 works in the state prison system, including 58 in Decatur.
Lincoln… In response to Governor Pat Quinn’s proposal to release prisoners from the Department of Corrections (DOC) for budgetary reasons, State Representative Bill Mitchell (R-Forsyth) is proposing legislation to stop their release.
Springfield… After today’s budget address to a joint session of the General Assembly, State Representative Bill Mitchell (R-Forsyth) called Governor Quinn’s tax-and-spend budget proposal a real job killer.
Democratic Governor Pat Quinn is calling for $7 billion in income tax increases, corporate loophole closings and tobacco tax increases. The increases average out to be $550 per person or $2,200 for a family of four. Specifically, the Governor wants to increase the income tax rate by 50 percent, from the current 3 percent tax rate to 4.5 percent. Representative Mitchell is disappointed that Quinn is targeting middle-class working families to fund more state spending. Continue reading »

FORSYTH – A Central Illinois lawmaker is proposing legislation to end what he claims is an unfair policy of giving “sanctuary” to illegal aliens.
State Rep. Bill Mitchell, R-Forsyth, intends to push for a vote on House Bill 2659, the “Local Government Compliance with Federal Immigration Law Act,” in a House committee on Wednesday.
Forsyth… A central Illinois lawmaker is calling for better representation on the Illinois Commerce Commission, which regulates utility rates throughout the state.
State Representative Bill Mitchell (R-Forsyth) believes the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) should have members from downstate Ameren territory. There are currently no commissioners representing customers served by Ameren.
“The ICC has repeatedly voted to allow Ameren to raise its rates on downstate electric and natural gas customers,” Mitchell said. “I strongly believe that we should have commissioners from Ameren territory making these decisions, because they would understand how harmful these huge rate increases are to downstate families.”
Springfield… Legislation that grants concealed carry rights to law-abiding gun owners has advanced out of committee in the Illinois House. State Representative Bill Mitchell (R-Forsyth) is sponsoring the legislation and he is urging downstate lawmakers to unite in support of concealed carry in order to get the legislation approved.
“For too long, downstate Illinois has taken a back seat to the interests of Chicago,” Mitchell said. “Last November, citizens in 10 downstate counties approved referenda advising the General Assembly to pass a concealed carry law. I’m urging my downstate colleagues to stand together so we can overcome the objections of anti-gun Chicago politicians and give people the right to defend themselves.”
Decatur… State Representative Bill Mitchell (R-Forsyth) is urging concerned citizens to sign a petition opposing a Democratic plan to raise the gas tax. Mitchell announced the petition drive at a news conference at the South Shores BP gas station in Decatur.
“The message is simple – ‘Just say no to more taxes!’” said Mitchell. “I’m urging everyone to sign the petition so we can send a strong message to Springfield that working families oppose this tax hike.”
House Bill 1 would raise the state motor fuel tax by 8 cents per gallon, costing Illinois motorists $500 million annually. The gas tax increase was proposed by a downstate Democratic legislator who is closely aligned with House Speaker Michael Madigan. The legislation was designated as HB 1 by Speaker Madigan, indicating his possible support for the measure.
